International community, assume your responsibility

Haiti begins a new calendar year with the same uncertainties. A year, like the others, which probably does not bring hope. It must lead to the renewal of the political class in the country, according to the agenda of the Prime Minister, Ariel Henry. A plan that does not agree with that of the majority of the population.

The country is not immune to everyday violence even if, for several weeks, a kind of parody of peace has been observed. Sanctions, no matter what, seem to diminish the gangs’ strength. They push them to revise their strategy a little bit. But nothing seems to be able to stop their abuses in society.

This is no guarantee for the Prime Minister who is playing, perhaps, his last political card. This is the new controversial consensus found between several sectors of national life and published in the official journal Le Moniteur. Doctor Henry hopes to expand it further for a minimum of political tranquility in order to go, as he wishes, towards the realization of elections in the country this year 2023.

It’s possible. But, first, the international community will have to make a little more effort to support the fight against insecurity through the considerable reinforcement of the National Police of Haiti (PNH), or military support by following a well-defined roadmap with clear objectives and a detailed mandate. Clearly, the future of the nation continues to swim in troubled waters. All the lights are still red and it’s going from bad to worse.

Going towards elections and handing over power to elected officials is the objective of the Head of the Primature. A desire that concerns only him since the population has, for the time being, its head elsewhere. His agenda is to leave the country for more clement skies. It is to take advantage of the new American opportunity to join the United States.
For many, the time has come to leave Haiti, its rapacious politicians and its problems of all kinds. Time to save his youth. To smile. To breathe. The time to live. The people are on board. A godsend for the men in power who can reassure themselves that there will not be angry popular demonstrations in the streets during this year. Besides that, the opponents are subdued by Canada and the United States. The way is now clear for the executive to act without constraint.

We do not know what the American project hides. We would rather have liked his support for the resolution of rampant insecurity. We would appreciate more if he repented of his destabilizing policy in Haiti. We would applaud him if he finally decided to actively participate alongside us, in complete transparency and honesty, in the quest to restore democracy and the rule of law in Haiti. Like all of us, the US Government has its agenda. Let everyone try their luck because migrating to survive is not a sin. It’s a natural instinct. To leave or to stay is a personal initiative. The crisis, on the other hand, concerns the community as a whole.
